§ 21405 Safety Member Disability Retirement

• •If a local safety worker (like a police officer or firefighter) retires because they can't do their job due to a non-work-related health problem, they can get their full retirement pay.
• •This only applies if they are at least the minimum age to retire without getting less money because of their age.
• •The rule was added in 1995 and started being used in 1996.

A firefighter who is 55 years old has a heart condition that isn't from work and can't be a firefighter anymore.

Because the firefighter is old enough to retire without losing money, they will get their full retirement pay even though they are retiring early due to their heart condition.
