§ 21229 Retired Employee Emergency Appointments

Key Takeaways

  • •Retired people can work again for schools or California State University in emergencies or if they have special skills, but only up to 960 hours per year.
  • •They get paid an hourly rate based on what other workers in the same job make, but no extra benefits or bonuses.
  • •If they got unemployment money from the same job in the last year, they can't use this rule to work again.
  • •If they take the job after getting unemployment, they must stop working at the end of the pay period and can't work again for a year.

Example

A retired teacher is asked to come back to help with a special project because no one else has the skills.

The teacher can work up to 960 hours in the year and will be paid the same hourly rate as other teachers doing the same job. But if the teacher got unemployment money from that school in the last year, they can't take the job.
