§ 21226 Retired Academic Service Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •Retired people can work part-time at California community colleges or the University of California without losing their retirement benefits.
  • •They can work up to 960 hours in a year (that's about 20 hours a week).
  • •If they got unemployment money from the same job in the last year, they can't use this rule to work there again.
  • •If they break this rule, they have to stop working right away and can't work again for a whole year.

Example

A retired teacher wants to teach a few classes at a local community college.

They can teach part-time (up to 960 hours a year) and still get their retirement money. But if they got unemployment from that college last year, they can't teach there now.
