§ 20688 Safety Member Contribution Reduction

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're a local safety worker (like a cop or firefighter) and part of your retirement money comes from the federal government, you might pay less into your retirement fund.
  • •Your normal retirement contribution rate is cut by one-third for any month you earn up to $400.
  • •This rule only applies to money you earn after your workplace joined this plan and before they stopped being part of the federal retirement system.
  • •If you earn more than $400 in a month, the extra money isn’t included in this discount.

Example

A firefighter earns $350 in a month. Their normal retirement contribution is 10% of their paycheck.

Because they earn less than $400, their contribution rate is cut by one-third. Instead of paying 10%, they pay about 6.67% (which is 10% minus one-third of 10%).
