§ 20684 Local Safety Member Contributions

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're a local safety worker (like a cop or firefighter) who started working on or after January 1, 1985, you have to pay 7% of your salary into your retirement fund.
  • •If part of your job is covered by the federal government and your retirement pay is cut because of that, you pay less (only about 2.3% instead of 7%) on the first $400 of your monthly pay for the time you worked under both systems.
  • •The rules start applying to you on the date you become a local safety worker under Section 21370.

Example

A firefighter starts working on February 1, 1985. His monthly salary is $3,000.

He has to pay 7% of his $3,000 salary every month into his retirement fund. That means he pays $210 each month.
