§ 17070 Unpaid Warrant Cancellation

Key Takeaways

  • •If the government writes a check (warrant) and doesn't pay it for a whole year, even though they have the money, they have to cancel it.
  • •The government must have enough money to pay the check and other more important bills before canceling it.
  • •This rule helps clean up old, unpaid checks that the government forgot about.

Example

Imagine the government writes a check to a school for new books but forgets to send the money. Even though they have the money in their bank account, they don’t pay it for a year.

Since the government had the money to pay the check and didn’t, they have to cancel it after one year. This means the school won’t get the money for the books anymore.
