§ 700 Unclaimed Trust Property Disposal

Key Takeaways

  • •If a company that holds money or stuff for others goes out of business and can't find the owners, they can give the money or stuff to the state.
  • •They need a court's okay to do this.
  • •Money goes to the Treasurer, other stuff goes to the Controller.

Example

A bank closes down and has some old safe deposit boxes that nobody has claimed.

The bank can ask a court for permission to give the stuff in those boxes to the state. If the court says yes, the bank sends the stuff to the Controller.
