§ 16006 Foreign Credit Union Branch Fees

This law tells foreign credit unions how much they have to pay the state for things like applying to open a branch, getting a license, and keeping branches or facilities in California.

Key Takeaways

  • •Application fees are fixed: $1,000 if the credit union isn’t licensed in the state, $500 if it is.
  • •A license to run a branch or facility costs $25.
  • •Every year, each branch costs $250 and each facility costs $100, but the total yearly fee can’t exceed $1,000.
  • •Examination fees are set by the commissioner and can include hourly costs and travel expenses.

Example

A credit union from another state already has two branch offices and one facility in California. Every July 1 it must pay a fee for those locations.

The law says the credit union must pay $250 for each branch and $100 for each facility, but the total can’t be more than $1,000. So it adds up the fees for its branches and facility and then checks the $1,000 cap.

How to Calculate

Fee = min( (250 × Number_of_Branches) + (100 × Number_of_Facilities) , 1000 )

  1. Multiply the number of branch offices by $250.
  2. Multiply the number of facilities by $100.
  3. Add the two amounts together.
  4. If the total is more than $1,000, the fee is capped at $1,000. Otherwise, use the total you calculated.

A foreign credit union has 3 branches and 2 facilities in California.

Result: Fee = min( (250×3) + (100×2) , 1000 ) = min( 750 + 200 , 1000 ) = min( 950 , 1000 ) = $950
