§ 8550 Herring Fishing Permit Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •You need a special permit to catch herring for business.
  • •The government can limit how many permits are given out and how much herring can be caught.
  • •They do this to stop too much fishing, keep the fishery running well, and keep people safe.

Example

A fisherman wants to catch a lot of herring to sell at the market.

He must first get a permit from the government. Even with a permit, there might be a limit on how much herring he can catch to make sure there’s enough left for the future.

§ 8550 Herring Fishing Permit Limits

Herring may be taken for commercial purposes only under a permit, subject to regulations adopted by the commission. The commission may, whenever necessary to prevent overutilization, to ensure efficient and economic operation of the fishery, or to otherwise carry out this article, limit the total number of permits that are issued and the amount of herring that may be taken under the permits. The commission, in limiting the total number of permits, shall take into consideration any restriction of the fishing area and the safety of others who, for purposes other than fishing, use the waters from which herring are taken. (Amended by Stats. 1996, Ch. 870, Sec. 38. Effective January 1, 1997.)
