§ 4005 Trapping License Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •You need a special license to trap animals like beavers or foxes, unless you're just trapping pests like rats or mice.
  • •You can't sell the fur from trapped animals unless it's been turned into leather or something similar.
  • •Some people, like government workers or pest control experts, don't need this license to trap animals.
  • •You have to pass a test to show you know how to trap animals safely before you can get the license.

Example

If you want to trap a raccoon in your backyard to sell its fur, you need a trapping license.

Without the license, you can't legally trap the raccoon or sell its fur. Even with the license, you can't sell the fur unless it's been tanned or cured.
