§ 1570 Private Land Recreation Program

This law sets up the SHARE program so private landowners can let the public use their land for wildlife‑related recreation and must spend any program money on wildlife conservation.

Key Takeaways

  • •Private land can be opened to the public for wildlife‑dependent recreation.
  • •Any SHARE money must be spent on wildlife conservation on that land.
  • •Non‑government groups are the main drivers of the program.
  • •The program is designed to cost the state as little as possible.

Example

A ranch owner lets hunters and bird‑watchers come onto his property for deer hunting and bird watching.

The owner can apply for SHARE funds, and any money he receives has to be used to improve wildlife habitat on his ranch, like planting native grasses. Non‑profit groups help organize the program.

§ 1570 Private Land Recreation Program

In establishing the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (“SHARE”) program, it is the intent of the Legislature to encourage private landowners to voluntarily make their land available to the public for wildlife-dependent recreational activities. The Legislature further encourages private landowners to use any funds received from the SHARE program for wildlife conservation purposes on their property. The SHARE program shall be a collaborative effort by all participants to facilitate wildlife-dependent recreational activities on private land at minimal expense to the state. The Legislature declares that interested nongovernmental organizations are the key to developing, planning, and implementing the SHARE program. (Amended by Stats. 2004, Ch. 183, Sec. 110. Effective January 1, 2005.)
