§ 10659 Private Land Wildlife Taking

This law lets the owner of private land inside the California Sea Otter Game Refuge, or their workers, hunt or trap nonprotected birds and mammals with guns or traps without needing any permit.

Key Takeaways

  • •Applies only to private land within the refuge.
  • •Only nonprotected birds or mammals may be taken.
  • •No permit or license is required for such taking.
  • •The landowner or their employees may possess firearms and traps for this purpose.

Example

A farmer who lives on a private ranch inside the refuge wants to control ground squirrels that are damaging his crops.

Ground squirrels are nonprotected mammals, so the farmer or his hired worker can use a rifle or trap on that land to kill them, and they do not need any special permit to do so.
