§ 67105 Avocado Handler Assessment Liability

Key Takeaways

  • •If you're the first person to handle avocados, you must pay a fee (assessment) to the commission.
  • •Even if you don't get the fee from the avocado grower, you still have to pay it yourself.
  • •If you don't pay the fee or file the required paperwork on time, you'll owe an extra 10% of the fee as a penalty.
  • •You'll also pay 1.5% interest every month on the unpaid fee until it's fully paid.

Example

A farmer sells avocados to a packing company. The packing company is supposed to collect a fee from the farmer and send it to the commission.

If the packing company doesn't collect the fee from the farmer, they still have to pay it themselves. If they don't pay on time, they'll owe extra money as a penalty and interest.
