§ 5645 Lien Termination On Redemption

Key Takeaways

  • •If the government or a city takes over your property, you lose the right to buy it back.
  • •Any debts tied to that property (like a lien) disappear when you lose the right to buy it back.
  • •This rule has been in place since 1967.

Example

Imagine you owe money on your house, and the city takes it because you didn’t pay taxes.

Once the city takes your house and you can’t buy it back, the debt on the house goes away too.
