§ 56105 Farm Product Commission Merchants

Key Takeaways

  • •A commission merchant is someone who gets farm products from farmers to sell for them.
  • •They don’t own the products—they just help sell them for the farmer.
  • •If someone buys the farm products directly (with a set price), they are not a commission merchant.
  • •They work like a middleman, selling stuff like fruits or veggies for the farmer.

Example

A farmer grows apples and gives them to a person to sell at the market.

The person selling the apples is a commission merchant because they’re selling the farmer’s apples but don’t own them. If they buy the apples first for a set price, they’re not a commission merchant.
