§ 554 Sustainable Agriculture Advisory Committees

Key Takeaways

  • •If the Sustainable Agriculture Program is created, the University of California President must set up two groups: a Program Advisory Committee and a Technical Advisory Committee.
  • •The Program Advisory Committee helps decide the goals and priorities of the program, like which grant applications should get money first.
  • •The Program Advisory Committee must have mostly farmers or people who work in agriculture, plus some people from the government, public groups, and schools who know about sustainable farming.
  • •The Technical Advisory Committee checks if the grant applications are scientifically sound and gives advice on them.
  • •People on these committees who don’t work for the university can serve for up to 3 years and get paid back for any costs they have while doing their committee work.

Example

A farmer wants to apply for a grant to try a new way of growing crops that uses less water.

The Program Advisory Committee would look at the farmer’s application and decide if it fits the program’s goals, like helping the environment. The Technical Advisory Committee would check if the farmer’s plan is scientifically sound and could actually work. If both committees like the idea, the farmer might get the grant money to try it out.
