§ 531 Animal Lab Budget Funding

Key Takeaways

  • •The California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory has its own budget line in the department's budget.
  • •Every year, they ask for money to run the lab. If they need to build something new or buy expensive equipment (over $150,000), they ask for that money separately.
  • •The director sends the money to the university that runs the lab, and the university follows its own rules to manage the money.
  • •The university and the department have a contract that says how the money should be used.

Example

The lab needs a new machine that costs $200,000 to test animal diseases.

The lab can't just buy it with their regular money. They have to ask for extra money because the machine costs more than $150,000. Once they get the money, the director sends it to the university, and the university buys the machine following their rules.
