§ 34302 Milk Handler Assessment Fees

Key Takeaways

  • •Milk handlers (people who buy or sell milk) must take a small fee from the money they pay to dairy farmers. This fee is up to $0.001 for every 100 pounds of milk.
  • •Handlers also have to pay another small fee of up to $0.0005 for every 100 pounds of milk they buy or handle.
  • •Both fees must be sent to the secretary within 45 days after the end of the month when the milk was received.
  • •The secretary can increase these fees a little bit each year, but not by more than $0.0001 for every 100 pounds of milk.

Example

A dairy farm sells 10,000 pounds of milk to a handler in January.

The handler must take out a fee of up to $0.001 for every 100 pounds of milk. So, for 10,000 pounds, the handler takes out $0.10 from the payment to the farmer. The handler also has to pay another fee of up to $0.0005 for every 100 pounds, which is $0.05. Both fees must be sent to the secretary by March 15.
