§ 14593 License Renewal Fees Penalties

This law says a business license ends on Dec 31 of every even year, you must pay up to $200 to renew each location, and you get a $50 fine for each month you’re late (but the fine can’t be more than the original fee).

Key Takeaways

  • •Licenses end on Dec 31 of every even‑numbered year.
  • •Renewal costs up to $200 for each business location.
  • •If you’re more than one month late, you pay $50 for each extra month, but the total penalty can’t be more than the renewal fee.

Example

A bakery has a license for its shop. The license expires on Dec 31, 2022. The owner waits until Feb 15, 2023 to renew.

Because the bakery didn’t renew within the one‑month grace period (by Jan 31), it owes a $50 penalty for the extra month it was late. The total cost is the renewal fee plus the $50 penalty.

How to Calculate

Penalty = min( $50 × M , OriginalFee ) where M = number of calendar months the location is unlicensed after the one‑month grace period.

  1. Find the original renewal fee (up to $200).
  2. Count how many full calendar months the business was unlicensed after the first month past expiration.
  3. Multiply that number by $50 to get the raw penalty.
  4. If the raw penalty is bigger than the original fee, cap it at the original fee.
  5. Add the penalty to the original fee to get the total amount due.

A coffee shop’s license expires Dec 31, 2022. The owner renews on April 10, 2023. The renewal fee is $180.

Result: Raw penalty = $50 × 3 = $150. Since $150 is less than the $180 fee, the penalty stays $150. Total due = $180 + $150 = $330.
