§ 9305 Initiative Petition Circulation Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •Before asking people to sign a petition, you must show the government a notice, reasons for the petition, the full text of what you want to change, and proof you told the public about it.
  • •Only certain people (who meet the rules in Section 102) can ask others to sign the petition.
  • •Every part of the petition must include the notice and reasons so people know what they're signing.

Example

You want to start a petition to add more parks in your town.

First, you have to give the town office a paper saying you plan to start the petition, explain why more parks are needed, show the exact words of your petition, and prove you told people about it (like putting it in the newspaper). Then, you or someone who is allowed can ask people to sign. Every page of the petition must have your notice and reasons at the top.
