§ 9206 Initiative Notice Filing Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If you want to propose a new law or change in your city, you must show proof that you told people about it.
  • •Within 10 days, you need to give the city office a copy of your notice and a signed paper from someone who saw it in the newspaper or posted in public.
  • •If you used both the newspaper and public posts, you need two signed papers—one from the newspaper and one from a voter who saw the post.
  • •All these papers must be given to the city’s election office during their normal work hours.

Example

You want to start a new rule in your town, like banning plastic bags. You put up posters and publish a notice in the local newspaper.

You have 10 days to take a copy of your poster and newspaper notice to the city office. You also need a letter from the newspaper saying they printed it and a letter from someone in town who saw your poster. If you don’t do this, your idea might not move forward.
