§ 12262 Election Boundary Change Deadline

This law says if voting district lines are changed less than 125 days before an election, the change doesn’t count for that election; voters use the old lines.

Key Takeaways

  • •Boundary changes must be at least 125 days before an election to affect that election.
  • •Changes made within 125 days are ignored for that election.
  • •Voters in the affected area vote as if the old boundaries are still in place.

Example

A city moves a neighborhood from District 1 to District 2 only 90 days before the November election.

Even though the neighborhood is now in District 2 on paper, the people living there still vote for District 1’s candidates in that election, just like before the change.
