§ 33338 School District Indirect Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •Schools get money from the state for different programs. Some of this money is for direct costs, like teacher salaries and textbooks.
  • •Some money is for indirect costs, like office work, payroll, and accounting that keep the whole school running.
  • •The state sets a minimum rate for indirect costs. Schools must get at least this rate unless another law says they can get less.
  • •This rule makes sure schools get enough money to cover their behind-the-scenes costs, not just classroom stuff.

Example

A school gets $100,000 from the state for a new reading program.

The school can use some of this money to buy books and pay teachers (direct costs). The rest can go to things like paying the people who handle the school’s bills or manage the budget (indirect costs). The state says the school must get at least a certain percentage for these indirect costs, so they don’t run out of money for important office work.
