§ 19520 Library District Bond Elections

Key Takeaways

  • •The library board can decide to ask people in the district if they want to borrow money (by selling bonds) to build or improve a library.
  • •If 50 or more people who pay taxes in the library district ask for it, the board must hold a vote on this.
  • •The borrowed money can be used to buy land, build a library, furnish it, or pay off old library debts.

Example

A small town’s library is too old and cramped, and the bookshelves are falling apart.

If 50 or more people in the town sign a petition, the library board must hold a vote. If most people vote 'yes,' the town can borrow money by selling bonds to build a new library or fix the old one.
