§ 19333 Book Recovery Lawsuit Authority

• •If someone has a state library book and won't return it, the State Librarian can sue them.
• •The person who kept the book might have to pay 3 times the book's value, plus court costs.
• •If the library had to buy the same book again because it was lost, the person might have to pay 3 times what the library spent on the new book, plus court costs.

You borrow a book from the state library but never return it. The library asks for it back, but you ignore them.

The State Librarian can take you to court. If the book is worth $20, you might have to pay $60 (which is 3 times $20) plus extra money for the court costs.
