§ 17606 District Superintendent Spending Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •Big school districts (with 60,000+ students) can let their superintendent or another person spend up to $100 per transaction without asking the school board first.
  • •This money can be used for work, paying employees or consultants, or buying equipment and supplies.
  • •If the person in charge spends the money in a bad or dishonest way, they have to pay the school district back.

Example

A large school district needs to buy new chairs for a classroom.

The superintendent can buy chairs costing up to $100 each without getting approval from the school board first. But if they buy really expensive chairs just to help a friend who sells furniture, they might have to pay the school back.
