§ 17409 School District Lease Elections

Key Takeaways

  • •Before a school district can lease or make an agreement for a new building or site, they must hold a vote.
  • •The vote asks people if the district can buy land, make plans, and lease buildings for schools.
  • •The vote also asks if the district can raise taxes a little bit to pay for these things.
  • •The extra tax money can only be used for the new school buildings or sites, nothing else.

Example

Imagine your local school district wants to build a new school because the old one is too small.

The school district must ask everyone in the area to vote on it. They will ask if people agree to buy land, make plans for the new school, and if they can raise taxes a little bit to pay for it. If most people vote yes, then the district can go ahead with their plans.
