§ 16300 School Construction Funding Limits

This law says that up to $2 million from school building bonds can be spent to build a new regional occupational center in San Joaquin County, and no more than $250,000 of that can go to design and engineering work.

Key Takeaways

  • •Only up to $2 million from the bond can be used for the whole campus project.
  • •No more than $250,000 of that money can be spent on design and engineering services.
  • •All other rules in sections 16000‑16006, 16009, 16018, and 16021 apply unless the board decides otherwise.

Example

The Stockton Unified School District wants to build a new career‑training campus and hires a firm to design the building.

The district can use the bond money to pay for the construction, but the design fees can’t be higher than $250,000. If the design costs $300,000, they would have to cut it down or find other money because the law caps it at $250,000.

How to Calculate

Total Expenditure ≤ $2,000,000 AND Architectural/Engineering Expenditure ≤ $250,000

  1. Determine the amount you want to spend on the whole project.
  2. Check that this amount is $2,000,000 or less.
  3. Determine how much you will spend on architectural and engineering services.
  4. Check that this amount is $250,000 or less.
  5. If both checks pass, the spending follows the law.

The district plans to spend $1,800,000 total, with $200,000 for design work.

Result: Both amounts are under the limits ($2,000,000 and $250,000), so the spending is allowed.
