§ 16008 Earthquake School Facility Repair Priority

This law lets the board give school districts the first chance to get money for fixing or rebuilding school buildings that were damaged by earthquakes after July 1, 1952.

Key Takeaways

  • •School districts get first priority for earthquake‑damage repairs when state funds are divided.
  • •Only earthquakes that happened after July 1, 1952 count.
  • •All other rules in the chapter still apply, except the rules that set priorities.
  • •The board can ask for an advisory report on how urgent the work is, but it doesn't have to base its decision on that report.

Example

A strong earthquake cracks the walls of an elementary school, and the district asks for state money to repair it.

Because of this law, the State Allocation Board can put that school at the top of the list and give it money before other projects, even though the board can look at a report about how urgent the repair is, but it doesn't have to follow the report.
