§ 15709 State Property Insurance Requirements

The board can tell school districts to buy insurance for any state‑owned school sites, equipment, or buildings, and the districts must pay for that insurance themselves, not using state money.

Key Takeaways

  • •The board can require insurance for any state‑owned school property.
  • •Insurance must cover the risks the board thinks are needed.
  • •State‑allocated funds cannot be used to pay the insurance premiums.

Example

A school district owns a state‑funded science lab building. The board orders the district to get fire and theft insurance for that building.

The district must purchase the insurance and pay the premiums from its own budget; it cannot use money that the state gave it for other purposes.
