§ 1002 County Board Trustee Boundaries

This law lets the county committee redraw the school board voting areas or change how many board members there are, and tells them when they have to do it.

Key Takeaways

  • •The county committee can change trustee area boundaries or suggest a different number of board members when the board of education asks.
  • •They must do this after each ten‑year census and file the changes by March 1 of the school year.
  • •If the new trustee areas line up exactly with the county’s supervisorial districts, the school board election is held together with the countywide election.

Example

After the 2020 census, the county board of education asks the county committee to redraw the trustee areas so they match the new population numbers.

The committee can change the lines or suggest having fewer board members, but they must file the changes in writing by March 1 of that school year.

(b) Following each decennial federal census, the county committee shall adopt trustee area boundaries pursuant to Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 21100) of Division 21 of the Elections Code. (d) Whenever the boundaries of trustee areas are changed so as to be coterminous with those of supervisorial districts of the county, excluding any part of a trustee area that is outside of the county pursuant to Section 1001, the election for members of the county board of education shall be consolidated with the countywide election.
