§ 7007 Teacher Health Benefits Plan

Key Takeaways

  • •Big groups like teacher unions or retiree clubs can work with the state to offer health insurance plans for teachers and retired teachers.
  • •Schools and school districts can choose to join these health plans if they want to.
  • •The health plans must charge the same price for both working teachers and retired teachers.
  • •This rule only applies if the school or district decides to follow it.

Example

A group of retired teachers wants to offer a health plan to all teachers in a school district.

If the group has at least 1,000 retired teacher members, they can team up with the state to create a health plan. The school district can then choose to join this plan, and both working and retired teachers in that district would pay the same price for their health insurance.
