§ 1695 Dentist Impairment Rehabilitation Program

Key Takeaways

  • •The law helps dentists who have problems with drugs or alcohol get better instead of just punishing them.
  • •If a dentist is struggling with drugs or alcohol, they can join a special program to get help.
  • •The program is voluntary, meaning the dentist chooses to join it.
  • •The goal is to keep the public safe while helping dentists return to their jobs after they recover.

Example

A dentist starts making mistakes at work because they are drinking too much alcohol.

Instead of losing their license right away, the dentist can join a program to get help with their drinking problem. If they complete the program and get better, they can go back to working as a dentist safely.

It is also the intent of the Legislature that the Dental Board of California shall implement this legislation in part by establishing a diversion program as a voluntary alternative approach to traditional disciplinary actions.
