§ 9161 Caregiver Support Services

Key Takeaways

  • •This law helps people who take care of adults with memory or thinking problems (like dementia).
  • •It offers support like advice, short breaks (respite care), counseling, and help with legal or money issues.
  • •The amount of help you get depends on what’s available in your area.
  • •You might have to pay a little for these services, but never more than they actually cost.

Example

If your grandma has Alzheimer’s and you take care of her every day, feeling tired and stressed.

The law says you can get help—like someone to watch her for a few hours so you can rest (respite care), or a support group to talk to other caregivers who understand what you’re going through.
