§ 5714 Mental Health Legal Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •Money for legal stuff involving people with mental health issues can't come from mental health service funds.
  • •This includes costs like taking someone in for a 72-hour check-up, court orders for evaluation, and legal help for those who can't pay.
  • •It also covers court costs for appeals, conservatorship cases, and other legal steps.

Example

If someone with a mental health issue needs to go to court for a check-up, the county can't use mental health service money to pay for the court costs or the lawyer.

The law says that money set aside for mental health services can't be used for legal stuff like court orders or lawyers. So, the county has to find another way to pay for these things.
