§ 5520 Mental Health Patient Advocates

Key Takeaways

  • •Every county must have someone to help people in mental health care who feel their rights are being ignored or they are being treated badly.
  • •This helper can look into complaints about bad treatment or rights being taken away in places like hospitals or care homes.
  • •The helper also checks these places to make sure they follow the rules about patients' rights.
  • •They teach workers about these rights and make sure patients know what their rights are.

Example

A person in a mental health care home is not allowed to call their family, even though they want to.

The person can tell the county patients’ rights advocate about this. The advocate will check if the home is breaking the rules by not letting the person call their family. If they are, the advocate will try to fix it.
