§ 4314 Patient Store Operations

Key Takeaways

  • •Hospitals can have small stores (like a snack shop) on their grounds to sell things like candy to patients.
  • •The store must not make a profit, but if it does, the money goes to a fund that helps the patients.
  • •Before opening a store, the hospital must check if there are enough nearby shops already selling these things.
  • •The hospital can rent space to someone else to run the store, but the rent money must cover the hospital's costs and any extra goes to the patient benefit fund.

Example

A state hospital wants to open a small shop to sell snacks and drinks to patients.

The hospital checks if there are enough nearby stores already selling these items. If not, they can open their own shop. If the shop makes extra money, it goes into a fund to help the patients.
