§ 2104 At-Risk Youth Mentoring Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •An 'at-risk youth' is someone under 21 who might struggle in school, use drugs, get in trouble with the law, or become a teen parent because of their surroundings.
  • •Mentoring is when older, caring people help and guide younger at-risk kids over time.
  • •A 'mentor-rich environment' is a place where kids can meet many caring adults and feel respected and connected.
  • •This law is no longer active as of July 1, 2013.

Example

A 16-year-old who lives in a neighborhood with a lot of crime and has friends who skip school might be considered an 'at-risk youth'.

This kid could get help from a mentor, like a teacher or community leader, who spends time with them, gives advice, and helps them stay on track in school and life.
