§ 8972 Warrant Exchange Procedures

Key Takeaways

  • •If you have an old unpaid check from the state that earns interest, you can ask to swap it for two or more new checks.
  • •You must give the old check back to the state so they can cancel it.
  • •You have to tell the state how many new checks you want and how much each should be for.

Example

Imagine you have an old $100 check from the state that they never paid, and it's been earning interest. You want to split it into two $50 checks instead.

You give the old $100 check back to the state and ask for two new $50 checks. The state cancels the old check and gives you the new ones.
