§ 8529 Debris Commission Funding Rules

• •Money given for projects must be spent following the plans approved by the California Debris Commission and the board.
• •The spending must match the big plan approved earlier (Section 8525).
• •If local groups spent more than their fair share (more than 1/3 of the total cost), the state can help adjust and pay them back fairly.
• •The money can also be used to keep things running and maintained while the project is being built.

Imagine your town and two other towns are working together to build a big dam to stop floods. The total cost is $300,000.

Each town is supposed to pay $100,000 (one-third of the total). But your town already spent $150,000 because they started early. The state can give extra money to your town to make it fair, so your town doesn’t pay way more than the others. The state will also use some money to keep the dam site safe and running while it’s being built.
