§ 14056 Small Community Wastewater Grants

Key Takeaways

  • •The state sets aside $25 million to help small towns build or fix places that clean dirty water.
  • •Small towns can get money (grants) to help pay for these projects, but the amount depends on how much the town can afford.
  • •No town can get more than $2 million for a single project.
  • •Towns can also borrow more money if the grant isn’t enough to cover all the costs.

Example

A small town needs to build a new water cleaning plant to stop polluting a nearby river.

The town can ask the state for a grant to help pay for building the plant. If the town is very poor, it might get up to 97.5% of the cost covered by the grant. But if the plant costs $3 million, the town can only get $2 million from the grant and will have to find the rest of the money elsewhere, like borrowing it.
