§ 12514 Minor Driver Permit Limits

This law explains the rules for junior driving permits for minors. It says how long the permit lasts, when it can be taken away, and what the permit looks like.

Key Takeaways

  • •A junior permit is only valid until the minor turns 18 or until they no longer need to drive (like if they move closer to school).
  • •The permit can be canceled if the minor breaks driving rules or if their situation changes (like if they no longer need to drive).
  • •The permit looks like a driver’s license but doesn’t have a photo and is only valid for up to six months unless certain conditions are met.

Example

A 16-year-old gets a junior permit to drive to school because there's no bus.

The permit will expire when they turn 18 or when they no longer need to drive to school. If they break driving rules, like speeding, the permit can be taken away.

(d) Upon a determination that the permittee has operated a vehicle in violation of restrictions, the department shall revoke the permit. (e) A junior permit is a form of driver’s license that shall include all information required by subdivision (a) of Section 12811 except for an engraved picture or photograph of the permittee, and is subject to all provisions of this code applying to driver’s licenses, except as otherwise provided in this section and Section 12513. (f) An instruction permit valid for a period of not more than six months may be issued after eligibility has been established under Section 12513.
