§ 7672 Hazardous Material Definition

Key Takeaways

  • •Hazardous material means something really dangerous, like chemicals that can hurt people or the environment.
  • •The law uses two big lists to decide what counts as hazardous: one from federal rules and one from California health and safety rules.
  • •If something is on either of these lists, it’s treated as hazardous here.

Example

A truck carrying gasoline crashes on the highway.

Gasoline is on the federal list of hazardous materials, so the spill is treated as a hazardous material incident. The rules for cleaning it up and keeping people safe apply.
