§ 731 Low-Income Utility Application Streamlining

Key Takeaways

  • •By June 30, 2024, California will make it easier for low-income families to apply for multiple energy assistance programs at the same time.
  • •You only need to fill out one application, and your info can be used for other programs like CARE, Family Electric Rate Assistance, and Energy Savings Assistance.
  • •The energy companies must ask for your permission before sharing your application info with other programs.
  • •You’ll get a notice if you’re enrolled or being enrolled in other programs—no need to apply separately.

Example

A single mom applies for the CARE program to get a discount on her electric bill.

While filling out the CARE application, she checks a box saying it’s okay to share her info. Later, she gets a letter saying she’s also enrolled in the Family Electric Rate Assistance program, which gives her even more help with her bill. She didn’t have to fill out a second application.
