§ 26454 Annexation Voter Approval Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If most people vote 'yes' on annexation, it passes.
  • •If the annexation makes a city take on the district's debt, then two-thirds of voters must say 'yes' for it to pass.
  • •The rules about votes and debt are there to make sure big money decisions have stronger support.

Example

A small town votes on whether to join a nearby big city. The deal says the big city will take over the town’s old library debt.

Normally, more than half the voters need to say 'yes' for the town to join the city. But because the big city would take on the town’s debt, the rule changes: now two-thirds of the voters must say 'yes' for it to happen.
