§ 26405 Petition Signature Verification

Key Takeaways

  • •If you collect signatures for a petition, you must swear that every signature is real and from the person who signed it.
  • •The person in charge of the district checks the signatures against voter records to make sure they are valid.
  • •If enough valid signatures are found, the petition is approved and sent forward.

Example

You want to start a petition to add a new playground in your neighborhood.

You collect signatures from your neighbors, and you must promise that each signature is real. The district secretary checks these signatures against voter records. If enough signatures are real, the petition moves forward.
