§ 25332 Prior Service Retirement Credit

Key Takeaways

  • •If you worked for a company or utility before it was taken over by the district, that time can count toward your retirement.
  • •This old work time is called 'prior service' and can help increase your retirement pay.
  • •It doesn’t matter if the old company was private or public—your past work still counts.

Example

John worked for a private water company for 10 years. Later, the city took over the company, and John kept working for the city. When he retires, the city counts those 10 years of private work toward his retirement pay.

The law lets John’s old work time count, even though it was for a private company before the city took over. This means he gets more money when he retires.
