§ 25053 Employee Transfer In Utility Acquisitions

Key Takeaways

  • •If a district buys a public utility (like a water or power company), they must hire the workers who have been there for at least 75 days.
  • •These workers get to keep their sick leave, vacation time, and seniority (how long they’ve worked there).
  • •The district doesn’t have to test these workers—they just give them similar jobs.
  • •Only the bosses or supervisors the district picks get this deal.

Example

A city buys a local water company.

The city must hire all the water company workers who have been there for more than 75 days. These workers keep their old sick days, vacation time, and job seniority. The city doesn’t make them take a test—they just give them similar jobs. But only the bosses the city chooses get this treatment.
