§ 131285 Competitive Bidding Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •If the county wants to buy stuff worth more than $75,000, they have to pick the cheapest offer from different sellers.
  • •The county must ask many sellers for their prices first (this is called competitive bidding).
  • •The only time they don’t have to do this is if there’s a big emergency, and most of the county leaders (two-thirds) agree it’s an emergency.

Example

The county needs to buy 100 new computers for schools, and the total cost is $80,000.

The county must ask different computer sellers for their prices and pick the cheapest one that can do the job well. They can’t just buy from the first seller they find unless there’s a big emergency, like all the computers suddenly broke and kids can’t do their schoolwork.
