§ 106032 Board Quorum And Voting

This rule says that more than half of the board members must be there for the board to do anything, and any official decision needs a majority vote of those members.

Key Takeaways

  • •You need a majority (more than half) of board members present to have a valid meeting.
  • •Any official action must be approved by a majority of the members who can vote.
  • •The rule applies to every official act the board does.

Example

A school board has 9 members. At a meeting, 5 members show up and vote on a new lunch menu.

Because at least 5 members (more than half) are present, the meeting can go ahead. To approve the new menu, at least 3 of those 5 members must vote yes, since that’s a majority of the members who can vote.
